ThisAbility was Ghana’s debut summer programme for children with autism and Dislabelled’s inaugural project. After doing an assessment of special education schools in Accra, we realized that we needed more information than what our observation and interviews had given us. As a result of this, we decided to implement a project that would allow us to immerse ourselves into a special education environment, familiarize with the teachers and understand the working mechanism of the school.
The program was aimed at unearthing the interest areas of the students at the Autism Awareness Care and Training (AACT), hence, we taught the students arts and crafts, music and dance and robotics. The project spanned from the 24th of June to the 5th of July 2013.
ThisAbility would not have been possible without our enthusiastic and energetic volunteer team. Prior to the summer programme, there was a workshop to train the volunteers to handle the demands of the project.
The climax of the summer programme was an event: ThisAbility. ThisAbility was a fundraising and a mural painting event where we showcased the items the children had made over the program. The mural was painted with the expertise of Nima Muhinmanchi. The mural has been pivotal in enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the school and creating more awareness on autism and the AACT.
